Trees in the Torah

Trees in the Torah

Ailanthus Altissima Commonly called “Tree of Heaven” or “The tree that grows in Brooklyn”

“I think that I shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree…” Joyce Kilmer

You must always be occupied with Torah, for it is “a Tree of Life to those who hold fast to it” Proverbs 3:18)

“I will open up streams… turn the desert into ponds, the arid land into springs of water. I will plant cedars in the desert, acacia and myrtle and the oil tree… ” [Isaiah 41:18-20].

There is a Midrash about our Patriarch Jacob that is truly fascinating. Long after the Jewish people left Egypt and were wandering in the desert, the Israelites built a dwelling place for G-d, the Tabernacle (a mobile Temple, a dwelling place for the Shechinah, the Divine Presence). The Tabernacle was beautiful, made from heavy beams, silver and gold fittings, decorated with tapestries and animal skins.

Where did the Israelites acquire the wood to construct the Tabernacle?

The sages say that Jacob had the incredible insight to bring cedar wood with him from G-d’s Holy Land when they made their way to Egypt. Jacob’s sons were entrusted to plant cedar trees. The same trees that would flourish, become tall and strong with vitality until needed for the creation of the Tabernacle.

The cedar tree is planted in our roots by our loving patriarch Jacob to protect us from outside elements while making a dwelling place for G-d inside.

Cedrus Libani, or the Cedar of Lebanon

The wood of the sacred Ark came from Acacia trees (Atzei Shittim), a rare type of tree that grows even in a desert wilderness. It is therefore the early precursor of the majestic tree known as the Cedars of Lebanon which, has been spreading throughout Israel, converting arid deserts into the lush productive land.

“I will open up streams… turn the desert into ponds, the arid land into springs of water. I will plant cedars in the desert, acacia and myrtle and the oil tree… ” [Isaiah 41:18-20].

The Tabernacle was built using cedar wood and stood for approximately 500 years. In fact, at the very onset of the Tabernacle’s construction G‑d says: “Make for Me a sanctuary, so that I can dwell in them” (Exodus 25:8). From this we can not help but look upon cedar wood today with a certain level of holiness.
